Last week my husband and I went to Jephson Gardens in Leamington hoping to have an enjoyable lunch at the restaurant which had new management last year.

On the question of street chuggers (KWN letters last week) it seems they have been popping up in towns across the UK, intimidating people, shoving tins and leaflets in peoples faces, even down to following members of the public down the street.

I agree with your correspondents’ comments in last week’s KWN. The planners are unfairly loading certain areas of the district with the new housing requirement. For the sake of balance and pressure on the infrastructure it should be spread more evenly around the area.

Nothing improper about committee changes

It is clear from many comments that have been published that I am being held responsible for trying to manipulate the planning committee membership in order to obtain a predetermined outcome on the Gateway planning application. To this end I am accused of deliberately changing the composition of the committee and of changing the chairman. Perhaps I can understand how this looks to the outside world, to those who don’t have a good understanding of how councils work. I hope, therefore, that you will give me the opportunity of setting out the real situation.

Last Sunday we opened for charity a group of five gardens in Kenilworth, under the National Gardens Scheme. They were ‘Fieldgate’ on Fieldgate Lane, 14c Fieldgate Lane, 3 Abbey Hill, 25 Malthouse Lane and ‘Tyroes’ on Chase Lane.

Let’s hope work starts immediately

I was delighted to hear that £37 billion pounds of investment between 2014-2019 will modernise the railways, including specific projects that directly benefit the local area from Nuneaton to Leamington with electrification, double-tracks, more frequent services; and now the fantastic news that Kenilworth will receive funding for a new station after 55 years!

Trains are quick enough already

I just do not understand this. I’ve just seen an advert from Virgin trains on TV where they can get you between London and Birmingham in 1 hour 24 mins. Now if that is so why do we need to ruin the countryside with this HS2?

Town still plagued by ‘chuggers’

Am I wrong, or wasn’t there recent legislation passed (or perhaps only proposed) to ban charity “chuggers” from our main shopping streets, because unfortunately we are still plagued by them on the Parade in Leamington?

On Sunday at approximately 9.30am, the first of 4,000 runners competing in the 31st Two Castles Run will enter Kenilworth from Leek Wootton having left Warwick castle at 9am. The winner will enter Kenilworth Castle around 9.33am.

What a shame it has come to this that Wilkinson seem to behave in a high-handed manner towards people who freely give their time to help charities by standing in Kenilworth town centre with collection tins rain or shine, yet other shops in Kenilworth treat them differently (‘Charity volunteers will boycott town store after trespass claims’, last week’s Weekly News).

I fully agree with Martin Halliday that HS2 is not a prerequisite for a mainline railway station in Kenilworth. But if funding a new station has proved a problem, serving it will not be a simple matter, either.
